Climate action is also a cultural and communication challenge. To reach people beyond traditional climate audiences, it is important to connect climate with the spaces, identities and conversations that already shape everyday life. Football is one of the world’s most powerful cultural platforms. As Brazil prepares to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, it creates a timely opportunity to connect climate communication, youth engagement, gender, sustainability and public participation.

Speakers:

  • Danielle Magalhaes, Climate Action Engagement Team Lead, UNFCCC will open the discussion by exploring why football and climate need to be part of the same conversation, and how football can serve as an entry point for wider climate engagement.
  • Eduardo Carvalho (Outra Onda Conteúdo) will present the new “Toolkit for communicating futures”, created by Outra Onda and C de Culture under the Climate and Culture Program, and discuss how climate narratives can connect with the cultural spaces people already go to or develop cultural activities.
  • Marcele Oliveira (Climate Champion COP30) will bring a youth and women’s perspective, focusing on participation, representation and the opportunities created by the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
  • Marcos Oliveira Jr. (UFRGS & University of Exeter) will present FutESG and the work with Brazilian Série A clubs to identify and share ESG practices, showing how universities and football organisations can contribute to climate action.
