In April 2024, the Secretary-General of the United Nations launched a Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals, bringing together governments, intergovernmental and international organizations, industry and civil society to develop a set of global common and voluntary principles to safeguard environmental and social standards across the minerals value chain. The Panel reported to the Secretary-General in early September 2024, outlining principles and recommended actions to address issues related to equity, transparency, investment, sustainability and human rights in the minerals sector.
At COP29, NRGI and CAN-International are co-organizing this event to spotlight the views and reactions of key actors in the climate action space to the UN Panel’s recommendations, including opportunities to complement and reinforce investments in climate mitigation, energy transition, adaptation and resilience. The event will identify priority next steps to ensure the international community builds on Panel recommended actions and supports greater equity and justice in mining for the energy transition.
