Indigenous initiatives to tackle climate impacts: Adaptation Plans and Indigenous Funds in the Amazon, Africa, Asia and the Pacific

The peoples of Roraima, in the Brazilian Amazon, were pioneers in drawing up Indigenous Adaptation Plans, which formed the basis for the chapter on Traditional Peoples in Brazil’s National Adaptation Plan. The panel aims to present the case of Roraima, as well as other successful indigenous initiatives from the Global South, in which indigenous communities have mobilized to deal with imminent risks.

Moderator:

  • Patricia Zuppi, from São Paulo/Brazil: International Advisor to the Indigenous Council of Roraima – CIR, Former Deputy Executive Secretary of the Amazon Cooperation Network – RCA, where she was coordinator for about ten years of the work on indigenous protagonism in climate advocacy and strengthening indigenous women’s initiatives in the Amazon.   • Hindou Oumarou Ibraim, Mbororo pastoralist people of Chad/Africa: President of the Association of Indigenous Women and Peoples of Chad – AFPAT, President of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, co-chair of the International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change – IIPFCC (will be invited)
  • Pasang Dolma Sherpa, Sherpa people of Nepal: Executive Director of the Center for Indigenous Peoples’ Research and Development – CIPRED, Former Co-Chair of the International Indigenous Peoples’ Forum on Climate Change (IIPFCC) and Former Co-Chair of the Facilitating Working Group (FWG) of the Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples’ Platform (LCIPP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – UNFCCC (will be invited)
  • An indigenous Pacific Islander leader will be invited, to be defined by the current co-chair of the UNFCCC Local Communities and Indigenous Peoples Platform (LCIPP) Facilitator Working Group for the UN indigenous socio-cultural region in the Pacific, Cathryn Eatock.
